Why Consumers Ignore QR Codes on Packaging
Putting a QR code on a product is easy.
Getting someone to scan it is a very different challenge.
As connected packaging adoption grows, consumers are seeing more QR codes across the products they buy. But simply placing a code on a pack doesn’t create engagement.
The consumer still has to make a decision:
“Is this worth my time?”
Understanding that moment is one of the most important parts of any connected packaging strategy.
1. There’s No Clear Reason to Scan
“Scan here.”
We’ve all seen it.
But it tells the consumer what to do without answering the more important question: why?
A stronger call to action communicates the value behind the interaction.
For example:
“Scan to win.”
“Scan for personalised recipes.”
“Scan to discover where your product came from.”
“Scan to collect rewards.”
The QR code is simply the doorway. The value behind it creates the motivation to open it.
2. The Experience Doesn’t Match the Promise
Imagine a pack promising an exclusive experience.
You scan it.
And arrive on the brand’s homepage.
That’s not much of a value exchange.
Connected packaging works best when the experience behind the scan has been designed specifically for that interaction.
That could mean a game, competition, personalised recommendation, loyalty experience, useful information or exclusive content.
The important thing is that the digital experience delivers what the physical packaging promised.
3. The QR Code Feels Like an Afterthought
Design matters before the consumer ever reaches the digital experience.
A QR code hidden among regulatory information, printed too small or placed without context can easily be ignored.
Instead, brands should think about the QR code as part of the overall packaging design.
Where does the eye naturally go?
Is the call to action visible?
Does the surrounding design create curiosity?
Does the consumer immediately understand that there is something worth discovering?
The physical and digital experience should be designed together, not separately.
4. There’s No Immediate Value
Consumers are exchanging something when they scan: their attention and time.
The experience needs to justify that exchange.
That doesn’t necessarily mean giving away discounts or prizes.
Value could be practical:
💡 Product advice
🍴 Recipes
♻️ Recycling instructions
🔍 Provenance information
It could be entertaining:
🎮 Games
🏆 Challenges
🎁 Competitions
Or it could be personal:
✨ Recommendations
❤️ Loyalty benefits
📱 Personalised content
The right value depends on the product, consumer and context.
5. Brands Focus on the First Scan, Not the Second
Getting the first scan is important.
Getting someone to return can be even more valuable.
If consumers know they’ll see exactly the same experience every time, there may be little reason to come back.
Connected packaging can instead evolve through changing content, new challenges, rewards, loyalty mechanics and personalised experiences.
That turns packaging from a one-time interaction into an ongoing consumer touchpoint.
Start With Behaviour, Not Technology
The most important connected packaging question isn’t:
“Which technology should we use?”
It’s:
“Why would someone want to interact with this?”
QR codes make the connection possible.
Design helps consumers notice it.
Behavioural understanding creates motivation.
And the experience behind the scan determines whether the interaction was worth it.
That’s why the strongest connected packaging strategies consider the entire journey:
Notice → Motivation → Scan → Experience → Value → Return
If any part of that journey breaks down, engagement becomes harder.
The Psychology Behind the Scan
We’ll be exploring exactly these questions in Appetite Creative’s upcoming webinar:
The Psychology Behind the Scan: How Design, Behaviour and AI Drive Connected Packaging Success
Jenny Stanley will be joined by Patrick Fagan, Co-founder & Chief Science Officer at Capuchin Behavioural Science, and Christel Morival, CEO of LAMARQ International, to explore why consumers notice, scan and engage, and how behavioural science, packaging design and AI can help brands create better connected experiences.
