Why Consumer Trust Matters in Connected Packaging
A QR code can open the door to a digital experience. But what makes consumers feel confident enough to step through it?
As connected packaging becomes increasingly common, brands are discovering that successful engagement depends on more than technology.
Design, psychology and trust all influence how consumers respond to interactive packaging.
This was one of the central themes explored during Appetite Creative’s webinar, “The Psychology Behind the Scan: How Design, Behaviour and AI Drive Connected Packaging Success”, featuring Jenny Stanley, Patrick Fagan and Christel Morival.
So, how can brands create connected packaging experiences that consumers genuinely want to engage with?
Trust Begins Before the Scan
The consumer experience doesn’t begin when someone opens a digital page.
It begins when they notice the packaging.
A QR code positioned on a product represents an invitation to interact. But consumers need to understand what they are being invited to do.
Clear messaging, thoughtful placement and a recognisable brand identity can help establish confidence.
For example, a message such as “Scan to discover how to recycle this pack” communicates a specific benefit.
A QR code without explanation leaves consumers guessing.
The clearer the promise, the easier it becomes for consumers to decide whether the interaction is worthwhile.
The Psychology Behind Consumer Engagement
Consumer behaviour plays a fundamental role in connected packaging.
People make quick decisions about where to direct their attention, particularly when interacting with everyday products.
This means brands need to consider more than simply making a digital experience available.
They need to understand what motivates participation.
A useful connected packaging experience should:
- Communicate its value immediately.
- Make the next action easy to understand.
- Avoid unnecessary steps or confusing navigation.
- Deliver an experience consistent with the promise on the pack.
- Respect consumers’ time, expectations and privacy.
These principles help reduce friction and create a more intuitive journey between physical packaging and digital content.
Design Creates Confidence
Packaging design has always influenced how consumers perceive products.
Connected packaging introduces another responsibility: helping people navigate between physical and digital environments.
Typography, contrast, visual hierarchy and QR code placement can all influence whether a connected experience feels accessible.
Consistency matters too.
If a premium product leads to a poorly designed digital experience, the transition may undermine the impression created by the physical packaging.
Brands should therefore treat packaging design and digital experience design as parts of the same consumer journey.
Where Does AI Fit In?
Artificial intelligence creates exciting opportunities to make connected packaging experiences more responsive and personalised.
AI-powered assistance could help consumers find relevant product information, explore recommendations or receive guidance based on their questions.
However, personalisation alone does not guarantee trust.
Brands still need to consider the accuracy of AI-generated responses, transparency around data use and the importance of maintaining a consistent brand experience.
AI should make interactions more helpful, not more complicated.
The most effective applications will be those that solve genuine consumer problems while keeping the experience understandable and reliable.

Building Experiences Worth Trusting
Connected packaging gives brands an opportunity to create meaningful interactions beyond the point of purchase.
But technology is only the starting point.
Consumers need a clear reason to engage, a simple way to participate and an experience that delivers on its promise.
By combining thoughtful design, behavioural understanding and purposeful technology, brands can create connected packaging experiences that feel useful, relevant and trustworthy.
Because a successful scan is not just about attracting attention. It’s about creating a connection worth continuing.
At Appetite Creative, we help brands transform physical packaging into interactive digital experiences that encourage engagement and deliver actionable insights.
